Robert Fulton (1765–1815) steams onto the cover of this Inventor Series hardcover notebook.
Fulton trained first as a portrait painter before trading canvas for machinery — he built the Nautilus, an early working submarine, for France in 1800. Then in 1807 his North River Steamboat (remembered as the Clermont) churned up the Hudson from New York to Albany, about 150 miles in 32 hours, and proved steam navigation could pay its way. Rivers became reliable highways, and a young country grew along them.
